On 5 December 2001 the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution on recommendations for volunteer action, in which it commended the ongoing contributions of all volunteers to society, encouraged all people to become more engaged in voluntary activities, and decided that two plenary meetings at its fifty-seventh session on 5 December 2002 should be devoted to the outcome of the International Year of Volunteers and its follow-up.
